How about a plant, has beautiful flowers, comes in many colours, covers the ground better than any, is used as a climber and looks its best while hanging down. The foliage is equally pretty, both leaves and flowers are used in Salad by some. It started blooming in my home on first of February and is still blooming profusely.

Nasturtium

In Karachi, it is not as heat tolerant as Petunia, blooms are only in red-yellow shades..

Bingo; for colours see Farhans posts.
I forgot to mention it will grow in any soil, come back on its own, free of cost and quality does not deteriorate over the years.

Yes Sir, you are right.. i bought seedlings in 2009.. it easily selfseeds every season.. doesnt require good soil and is fragrant too..

What about Phlox??

1) Lots of blooms over a long period
2) Available in many striking colors
3) Grows in small pots equally good
4) Self seeds easily
5) Heat tolerant

Look at this March 2014 pic:

The best thing about Phlox that seedlings from previous season tend to emerge automatically and there's variety of colour. Another close contender is diamond variety of Dianthus which also self seed easily along with a Verbena variety which is perennial.

The only drawback about Nastartiums is that they readily get attached by caterpillars and other pests. One has to resort to spray which is not the case with Petunia, Phlox, Dianthus and Verbena.

Phlox is as good as any other, seeds are easy to collect, but I feel the flower gets smaller over the year.

Those who participated in discussion must have read between the lines that the discussion was basically for the benefit of new gardeners. Gardening can be simple and still enjoyable.
Thanks every body
