Plant Hormones

Post by Muhammad Arif Khan »

Use of plant hormones are considered essential for achieving the best results.
Gibberelic Acid,Known as GA-3, Benzyl-AminopurineKnown as 6-BAP, Naphthalene Acetic AcidKnown as NAA and Triacontanol.
It is claimed that although they may seem to be expensive, the PGR’s are very economical to use and are essential for nurserymen and professional gardeners.

Has any member used any of these.
Your comments please.

I have used Planofix (NAA) for rooting cuttings.. works great...

I had no issues of flower or fruit dropping but sprayed my plants as an experiment... all the new growth was twisted / bent within 8-9 hours... no other effect was observed...

An article by Ibrar A Mumtaz of Pakistan Horticulture Society.
He now grows only Day lilies, imports about two doz, new varieties every year some as expensive as 200-500 US $.

Plant Harmon
There are various PGR’s and the most commonly used ones are discussed below:-
Gibberelic Acid,Known as GA-3, this PGR was discovered way back in the 1930’s and is widely used in agriculture and horticulture to increase crop yields, make the fruit and flowers bigger and to generally increase the size of the plant. It is also known to make fruits like citrus, guava, custard apple, grapes and many others not only seedless but also to increase their size by 25 to 50%. This is available as powder as well as in liquid form. Powder is not soluble in water and requires a special process and different chemicals to dissolve it so it is best to use the stock solution which comes in a 1% strength. In roses and gerberas as well as other cut flowers, it will make the stems longer and the flowers bigger. GA-3 is also known to induce off season flowering and in the case of roses and daylilies as well as annuals, flowering can be induced atleast two weeks to a month ahead of schedule. This is widely used by professional cut flower growers in the West to get longer stems and bigger flowers. Also used widely by gardeners competing in flower shows and competitions.
Benzyl-AminopurineKnown as 6-BAP, this is a cell divider which means that it multiplies the plants rapidly. Under normal conditions, plants like daylilies and gerberas multiply only once a year but 6-BAP induces the plants to multiply much faster and you can have a heavy clump of daylilies and gereberas in one year. In the case of annuals like pansies, petunias and other flowering plants, it makes the plants bushy giving you atleast double the number of flowers that you would normally get. As a cell multiplier, it will induce growth of many more leaves on all kinds of plants including house plants which will result in a much more healthy and bushy plant because the higher the number of leaves on the plant, the more chlorophyll it gets. Use of BAP will also induce an earlier flowering. Studies carried out on Rhododendron over a six month period showed three times the number of leaves on plants sprayed with BAP than the ones which were not sprayed. It comes in powder form but like GA-3, it also requires special chemicals to dissolve it so it is best to buy a stock solution of 1%.
Naphthalene Acetic AcidKnown as NAA, this is basically a rooting hormone and is best applied as a drench for weak plants to promote a better root system. Excellent for seedlings to promote a faster and more robust root system which will promote a healthier and bushy seedling. It is widely used as a soil drench and is specially useful when transplanting trees and plants from one place to another and from pots to beds. It is also used for rooting cuttings. This is excellent for Orchids and when sprayed directly onto the roots, promotes vigorous growth. This comes in powder form but as with other PGR’s, needs special chemicals and process to dissolve. It is best to use the stock solution of 1%.
TriacontanolThis is a relatively new PGR and was discovered in the 1980’s. This is the secret ingredient alongwith NAA in products like Super Thrive sold in USA as a miracle product for all kinds of plants and is reputed to bring a dead plant alive. The combination of NAA and Triacantanol is used widely where massive plantation is carried out by municipilaties,. This is also used by forestry and orchard owners while planting new trees to get a zero mortality rate. Triacontanol also promotes healthy and bushy plants and like GA-3, will increase the size of stems as well as flowers and fruits.
All PGR’s should be used sparingly and GA-3 and Triacontanol should be used in rotation for best results. Although they may seem to be expensive, the PGR’s are very economical to use and are essential for nurserymen and professional gardeners. All the above PGR’s are also used in tissue culture / micro propogation labs to induce roots and shoots and achieve a fast growth rate. It is also used in tunnel farming of off-season vegetables
Usage and dosageThe general rule of thumb is to use 10 to 15 drops of the 1% stock solution in 1 litre of water. This will give you a usable solution of 0.001% strength. A 100 ml bottle of stock solution will give you 100 to 130 litres of usable spray solution. You will normally use 5 to 10 litres of spray in a good sized plants. To give you a better idea, 10 litres of 0.001% spray solution is enough for a rose garden of about 2000 plants.
Its use on gladiolus, gerbera, Iris and other cut flowers will give you bigger florets and longer stems thus fetching a premium in price.
In the fruit growing area, the use of GA-3 will not only make your fruits 25 to 50% bigger but will also make them seedless with regular spraying at the proper time.
Useful tips.It is essential that you adopt good horticultural practices as far as the soils are concerned. Have them analysed atleast twice a year from the soil testing laboratory and check specially for humic acid or organic matter in the soil. Humic acid is the one which makes the nutrients available to the plant roots and anything less than 1% are considered to be poor soils. Always supplement your soils with leaf manure, farmyard manure and other organic manures as they contain humic acid. Chemical fertilizers like urea and ammonium nitrate actually reduce the organic matter in the soil so it is essential that you supplement with organic manures. Now, concentrated Humic Acid is also available in granular form and it is a good idea to refresh your soils with humic acid granules twice a year.
MulchingMulching is not practiced much in Pakistan. It is widely practiced in the West and involves covering your soil in flower beds with either coarse leaf, pine needles, or with wood chips. This suppresses weeds and conserves moisture in the beds. This also acts as an insulator and will keep the soil temperature cool in the summers and warm in the winters. If you are using dried leaves, remember to keep them moist at all times so that they do not blow away with a strong breeze. At the end of summer you will have an excellent black crumbly soil when the organic matter has decomposed.
Availability of PGR’sAll the PGR’s mentioned in this article are available with all the branches of Fazal Din’s Pharma Plus in small and convenient gardeners packs of 30 ml as well as larger agricultural size of 1 litre. It takes one or two days to dispense so order two days before you intend to use them.
