What a formulae,Six granules for six inches pot,12 granules for a 12 inch pot.
A 6X6X6 pot has a volume of 216 cubic inches and a 12X12X12 inch pot has a volume of 1728 cubic inches, that is 8 times and not double. It works out the same with round tapering pots. :?

Sir, the nutrient absorbing roots are present mostly at the top and around the walls of container... my calculation is based on my experience.. I have used many methods like mixing the granules in potting mix, inserting the granules in upper 3-4 inches of soil, dissolving in water and applying liquid, high dose one time, small doses regular time.. In my observation the dissolving and applying liquid method was the best but it takes time.. next method which showed good result was the one it stated above..

It is also important to note that when we apply fertilizer to ground based plants, we only consider the surface area as the feeder roots are at surface..

Another observation for 6 inch and 4 inch pots was 2-3 granules weekly worked wonders on Pentas, Marigold, Petunia on commercial scale...

The subject has been discussed before under various headings.
Pot environment is different from ground environment. In ground only surface area is important but in case of pot as what ever you add can not escape, the volume becomes important.
The depth of feeder roots vary from plant to plant, mostly superficial in most annuals. In a pot these rots go along with the wall of the pot bringing the deeper soil in to play.
All elements are absorbed by plants in soluble salt form and soluble salts due to osmoses spread uniformly in the medium.
Even the surface area of a 12 inch pot is 4 times that of 6 inch pot.
Our agre. scholar members can through better light.

Sir, what should be a practical solution for applying fertilizer in granular form to the pots with respect to size?? Need input based on your own experience..

Izhar, I use granular form only on lawn, when preparing beds for planting and on initial preparation of potting medium.
For later feeding of beds and pots I use

My fertilisers (I keep changing according to availability of basic fertilisers)

Mix A
Starter and finisher NPK 9.35 – 23.9 – 17.3
50<100 PPM N Seedlings 400<800 PPM N for mature plants
DAP 12Kg
SOP 8
Fe Sul 2
Mag sul 1
Borax 50gm
Zinc Sul 25
Mng Di oxide 20
Copper Sul 10
Sod Molibedate 10

2 Kg in 10 L gives a stock of 18400PPM N,
Dilute according to requirement.

Mix B
Growing period NPK 14.4 – 6.4 – 14.3
400>800 PPM N or
Nitro Phos 9Kg
SOP 8
CAN 8
Micro nutrients 3.1
As above

2 Kg in 10 L gives a stock of 29000 PPM N
Dilute according to requirement
275Gm of mixture per 100 sq foot on preparation of beds.

I hope it helps
Arif
