Information regarding plants whose seeds should be sown in situ and those to be sown in trays is requested.

Some seeds suitable for on location (in situ) sowing include alyssum, cosmos, nasturtium, portulaca, sunflower, cosmos, celosia, and salvia. (They not like shifting)
The best seeds for sowing in plug trays are those which are easy to handle because of large size.
Very small seeds like begonia are suitable for flat trays or pots. (Can be shifted later)

In my very limited experience, those plants which dont grow adventitious roots along with their stems resent transplanting.

One of my acquaintance who grows Zinnias in Canada and is a specialist in growing them told me to compare the results of direct sown and transplanted seedlings of same seed batch. He told me that the direct grown plants are more healthier and bloom more double then a transplanted plant of same variety.

Direct sown Balsam has a longer life then a transplanted one.

Seed sowing is the most important step of gardening and yet we know very little about it.
Here is the gist of knowledge I have gained on the subject applicable to amateurs like us;
Know the sowing time/period
Sow in plug trays
Sowing medium, 70% Peat & 30% Perlite (recommended by SAKATA Japan)
Cover seeds with fine Perlite according to size of seed
Keep moist; do not let it dry out, keep arround 75 F & 70% humidity (ideal)
10 days after germination start feeding with NPK 2-1-2, 50 PPM-N
After two weeks increase to 100 PPM-N
Transfer the plugs to 4 inch pots or beds when root bound
Acclimatise to sun before shifting to full sun.

Some of them are already sprouting.

Almost all annuals have sprouted. Some day lily are also out. Combretum not yet.
