Planting palm tree seeds....

Post by Gardener »

I have palm tree seeds. I am not sure when should I plant them. I have researched the internet and it is advised that they should be planted in warmer months. But I am in Lahore and as we have a a warmer climate over here, can I sow these seeds now or should I wait till the next year?

Looks like windmill palm or some fan palm seeds. I believe they call them table palms at local nurseries.
Do tell me if I can plant them now and what kind of potting mix should I use?

Some palms are hardy but seedlings cannot tolerate the cold of Lahore. The best time of sowing them is April.
Clean the seeds.Get rid of any flesh or hairs adhering to them. The biggest problems of germinating palm seeds is too wet medium. Use the medium which is barely moist. Vermiculite is the best medium, use only one tablespoon water for moistening 250ml Vermiculite. Enclosed vermiculite & seeds in a zip lock plastic bag and place them at 25 oC in light. When a root appears(it will take 45 to 60 days), transfer seeds into well-drained soil & compost mix.

P.S. How am I going to keep them till April? I heard that keeping the seeds at a cool, dry place can help.

Storing seeds in this period is not a problem because of normal temperatures, place at room temperature in air tight container.
