Newbie here

Post by new_gardener »

Asalam Alekum. I was away so could not follow the forum. Just recently I have shifted in a house that has a small kitchen garden. There are some veggies growing, thanks to the last occupant. I would need your help and guidance. The garden is about 12 x 36 feet. On one side is the house itself and on the other side is a wall. The direction of sun is from house to wall, east to West. Please see the pic.

Some of the veggies pics are also shown.Image

The garden itself.

Not sure what this is.

Image
This is a Bhindi plant but I think this is dead or dying?
Image
Red chilli? I think this is also dead.
Image
Some empty space.

Now, please suggest what do to?
Should I remove all plants and start anew? Or should I try to revive this kitchen garden?
Do you suggest preparing the ground first?
Many thanks. I am a newbie with no experience.

Excellent opportunity, The okra plants are at their end, take them out clean their area... this garden is full of weeds, first clear these, hoe and til the soil... add lots of old well rotted manure (ojhri ki khaad)... you can plant salad leaves, bringles, tomatoes, radish right now...

Best of luck!

Thanks for the prompt response.
A couple of questions.
1. Salad, bringles, tomatoes and radish will they require paneeri?
2. I have compost about 2 kg will that be ok? How much to add in the garden?
3. I plan to grow radish, carrots, palak, okra, tomatoes, kheera and may be onions.
Thanks
Izhar

Salad will require paneeri, while others can be sown as seeds
2 kg compost will be for just 1 square foot area, Ojhri ki khaad is around Rs.150/- for a 50kg bag, for better yield you have to mix the upper 4-6 inches with this manure..
All of your mentioned plants can be grown with ease in Karachi

I cleaned the garden of all weeds. Then it was leveled.
I found a nursery that gave me 50 kg of Ojhri ki khad. This is how it looks now.

The red chilli plant has some white stuff on it. Please see if this is an ailment or something else, thanks.

Someone told me if there's white flowers in the chilli plant it means it will bear fruit. Is it true?

Image
After adding ojhri ki khad we sowed Brinjal, tomatoes and cherry tomatoes. Nect up is Okra. The nursery guy has promised to give me paneeri of Ice berg lettuce and Brocolli next week.
I also intend sowing some garlic and potatoes.

Please see and comment/suggest. Many thanks. It would have been possible without your help.

Good to look your garden coming in shape. The image with white stuff is not clear enough to identify but saying roughly it is mealy bugs usually they do not come at this time of the year.

Many thanks guys. I owe it to you. Taking the first step is the most difficult part, but I am through with that.
