Amaryllis/Hippeastrum

Post by Muhammad Arif Khan »

It would be interesting to know how many of our members are growing Amaryllis and how many are breeding them?
Please also indicate the varieties if you know.

My goodness you have better collection than mine
Doubles have caught up in last few years and are becoming more and more popular.
Are yours all in pots, if so what size of pot and the medium you are using ;)
Do show us all blooms.

What I have in mind is to develop a data of these beauties, What each member has so that one day we will be able to exchange bulblet.

Yes its a good idea.I have purchased some bulbs this year which are of course forced bulbs & will soon bloom.I, l post the pictures. All of my Amaryllis are potted bulbs.I use river sand, some soil & a little amount of old manure.River sand has sharp drainage so amaryllis are happy in it.Sir some of my bulbs have formed baby bulbs.Once you adviced me to root bound Doubles its really working. You are the master of Amaryllis my sir.

The bulbs I shifted to pots in 2012 are not growing to my satisfaction, Perhaps they did not get enough water.
What size of pot are you using.
Happy gardening.

Sir below are some varieties which i recall growing over the years.

SINGLE VARIETIES
Mont Blanc
Apple Blossom
A single orange variety presumably Orange Sovereign.
Naranja
Lemon Lime
Picotee
Clown
Graffiti
Benfica (Black Pearl)

DOUBLE VARIETIES
Dancing Queen
Double Roma
Aphrodite
Lady Jane
Pasadena
Blossom Peacock
Double Record
Elvas
Charisma
Cherry Nymph
White Nymph
Flaming Peacock
Joker
Double Dream
Benito
Ice Queen
Alfresco
First Love

CYBISTERS
La Paz
Chico
Lima
Jewel

And finally some cross varieties.

VARIETIES WHICH PERISHED
Susan
Rilona
Papillio
Double Picotee
Moonlight

My preference is based on colour and shape of the flower and personally i prefer singles even though they are lesser compared to the doubles in my collection.
