Tips to grow Amaryllis require a well drain medium to grow just like any other bulbous plant. Amaryllis grow in two phases: a flowering phase in the winter, followed by a foliage phase in the summer. Near the end of the summer, as the leaves die, gradually allow the bulb to dry out, and then move it back indoors or dig the corm and store them in a cool and dark spot, if the weather conditions are not harsh in winter then they can survive in soil. In late fall begin watering gradually and a new flower stalk will emerge. You can time the flower cycle based on when you resume watering.

Other Details Hippeastrum bulbs are popular flowers in world. They are often commonly, but incorrectly, known as amaryllis. It is easy to grow and easy to care for, and when taken indoors, it can still bloom indoors. Hippeastrum fowers can be red, pink, white, orange, yellow and green. Some may have multiple colors with stripes or different colored petal edges. The beautiful hippeastrum flowers last for two to three weeks. After planting hippeastrum bulbs, water just enough to keep the potting soil moist. When growth appears, let the top half of the soil dry out between waterings. When the hippeastrum plant is fully grown, keep potting soil constantly moist, but never soggy.Once the hippeastrum plant has died back and gone into dormancy, you can find small bulbs at the base of the parent bulb. Detach these if they are at least an inch across. Keep as many roots attached as possible, and then grow them as you would with mature bulbs. The bulbs will not flower again until they reach 3.5 inches across. You can also grow hippeastrum from seed.In general only a large bulb will put up more than one flower scape or spike but this depends on the cultivar itself; some smaller bulbs have two while some larger bulbs make only one. A bulb must produce at least four large, healthy leaves in the summer growing season before it can send up a scape the following year. Some bulbs put up two flower scapes at the same time; others may wait several weeks between blooms and sometimes the second scape will have only two or three flowers rather than the usual four. Dutch bulbs usually produce flowers first, then, after it has finished blooming, the plant will begin growing leaves. Bulbs from the South African growers usually put up a scape and leaves at the same time.
The flower colors include red, rose, pink, white, orange, yellow, and pale green with variations on these including different colored stripes and edges on the petals. Some flowers have uniform colors or patterns on all six petals while others have more pronounced colors on the upper petals than on the lower ones.
There are five types: 1) single flower; 2) double flower; 3) miniature; 4) cybister; and 5) trumpet. Cybisters have extremely thin petals and are often described as spider-like. Trumpets, as the name suggests, have flared, tube-shaped flowers.
