Post by M Farooq »

Botanical Name Trachelospermum jasminodies
Family Apocynaceae
Local Name in Urdu N/A
Common Name Star Jasmine, Confederate Jasmine or Trader's Compass.
Fragrant or Not Fragrant
Category(Bush/Vine/Tree) Vine
Height 3-6 ft after 3 years and 20-30 ft eventually
Spacing spacing of at least 6 feet.
Flowering Months Spring
Flower Color White, flower is shaped like a star.
Growing Areas Can be grown successfully in all areas of Pakistan provided guidelines mentioned below are followed. Might be frost tender for colder area like Chitral, Gilgit Baltistan etc.
Frost Tender Can be grown in Northern areas as well as in plain regions.
Exposure Grow in full sun to get maximum flowers.
Soil pH Can be grown in our ordinary soil which is mostly alkaline in nature. This evergreen vine is tolerant of moderately dry conditions and does better in a site having good drainage.
Propagation By layering mostly as it's difficult to propogate from cuttings.
Uses Ornamental.
Other details There are two types of Star Jasmine i.e. one having varigated leaves and other plain green leaves. Flower size is same in both varieties. Has a milky sap and thus advisable to wear gloves. This is very versatile vine which can cover a wall, trellis or perabola. Personally i feel if one intends to grow a vine for sake of floral display then this vine is ideal. A small vine in a pot can be bought for Rs 50.

Khabbab, coincidently, my reference book Botanica also says "This plant does best in a sunny position" as stated above. What is your experience because I have never seen this growing in Karachi?

I doubt if profuse flowering can be achieved in a shaded location. Atleast 4-5 hours of sunshine is required for profuse flowering.

I have it in a pot in my backyard and it flowered well in spring but in a 14 inches pot it is still s small plant. It is on full shade. Next year it will confirm if it will flower in full shade or not
It does very well in full sun in ground but I think I have read it blooms well in shade
Remember, full sun mentioned in books and internet is in context of temperate climate and not subtropical semi desert climate of Lahore.

Very nice addition Umar sb. I happened to this plant by chance few days ago, and the fragrance during the day time wasn't heavy like our typical jasmines? An individual flower has a light fragrance. Is this correct?

I planted a Star Jasmine to be a fragrant plant over four years back, but it hasn't flowered yet nor has it grown any thin vine shoot. One of its shoot has grown long out of the bush but looks much thicher & stiff to be a vine shoot.Pics are posted below. Please confirm if it is a Star Jasmine plant or some other & if it actually is ,then why hasn't it taken the vine shape & hasn't flowered yet? I'll like to replace it if it doesn't serve the purpose.
