I see that we have only a fraction of varieties available here in Pakistan so i would try to acquire small specimen from abroad, i guess we can ask someone to slip in a handful of plants in their luggage and hope that they survive the trip, any tips on how to make sure that they are able to live through their journey :?:
Thanks, you can start uploading the pictures of those Agave species which are confirmed (please mention reference), and then we will make an entry like your Blue sage plant to your photo credit.

Asalamulaykum everyone...

Just join this lovely site...and not long ago, (about a year ago) took my first baby steps in planting and growing cacti. :P
Although the cacti i planted last year are growing fine (by grace a Allah all survived accept one)...but non have flowered. As yet I have no idea what the individual varieties in my little collection are called. I got all of mine from a generous next door neighbor who has a good collection, (took all of them as little kiddy plants from his pots). :)

As a beginner...I used regular river silt or "bhaal" + regular builders sand + some organic material to create the potting mix. A mistake i`m sure in the eyes of an expert hobbyist! But since I operate on a tight budget I had to make do with what ever was at hand...!

Please guide me on how to create a good potting mix for my future spikey fuzzy friends...
I will soon post pictures of my plants so please guide me on what the individual varieties are called...and from where do all of you guys source all these lovely varieties (I understand that cacti are rarely available at local nurseries, and even if they are they cost an arm and a leg to purchase as prices at nurseries are unreasonably high!?!) Is there a cheaper way to buy/get cacti varities from? I like growing mine from baby plants...!

SubhanAllah...MashaAllah.

Such splendid display...May you have many more!

I have so many questions!?!
I started collecting cactus (thanx to a generous neighbor) last year and have about 15 different types. All are rooted and are still rather small!
I still do not know nearly all of their names and types...All I know is I have got 3 Astrophytums, 2 Echinopsis and I guess 2 Pachycereus...rest of their names I have no idea about. Please guide me through the broad categories of cacti...
Also guide me on how to prepare the ideal potting mix for cacti in our climate...as I have planted all of mine in a mixture of river silt ("bhaal") + ordinary builder`s sand + some organic material!
Though a planted all early last year...non have flowered yet, though are growing ok! Guide me on how can I make mine flower as lovely as your`s! :)
Also from where do you source all these wonderful varieties of cactus...I understand they are rarely available at local nurseries, and even if they are, the nurseries charge unreasonably high prices for them (I got all of mine free from my neighbor as little baby plants)

Thanx,
Farrukh

Most of the flowers (like astros) last for a single day. Some only one night (like echinopsis, night blooming cereus). Others (e.g. Gymnos) last many days.
Thank you.
