Post by new_gardener »

Asalam Alekum,
My name is Nauman Khan. I am 43, living in Karachi. I know nothing about gardening or growing plants!!! But I want t o learn. I want to grow organic veggies in pots since we have confined space in flats. I would request senior members to help me in this regard. I am a Govt employee. I love to read, and write. Feels good to be here. Thanks. :)

Thanks for the warm welcome :)
I read the veggies section. But I think before jumping in to it unprepared, I will try to fathom all the info I can. As a starter, I will try to grow just one or two seasonal vegs in Sept. For that I am arming myself with knowledge.
Thanks once again. ;)

As you're new to gardening and live in Karachi too then I will suggest you to grow lady finger and dhaniya because they are humidity lover and suited to Karachi's temperature.

@ MB, many thanks for the valuable suggestion. Do you suggest growing them in pots? And is it necessary for lady finger and dhania to be germinated and then shifted? Please excuse my ignorance on the subject :) In short what all plants have to be germinated and why?
Thanks again :D

Since I am not so much specialist but I prefer Dhaniya and Lady finger to be grown from seeds and there is no other method of there propagation indeed. The reason of transplanting I have understood since is that If the plants are not spaced upto there requirements it will cause there roots to merge and if one plant get infected the other will automatically be infected and the stronger plant will get all the water and the weaker one will be withered.
Although ground is the superior place for almost any plant but due to less space I grow them in container.
