It might be a good idea to hard prune to get more branching and therefore more flowering.

I agree but some would argue leggy plants when pruned will be bushier and bloom more, both desirable traits in any plant.

More than half the beauty of a plant is in its form and shape; I would like to have a tall lanky plant branching in all directions with tufts of flowers at the tip of each branch
