Huge African Bulbs

Post by tweedle2009 »

The seller just emailed me these pixConsider the size of bulb to an apple..The biggest are Boophane disticha and the others are ammocharis coranica. The boophanes are 12-14 years old whereas the ammocharis are 8-9 years old mature bulbs.Brunsvigia Bosmaniae will be following soon. They mature at the age of 15 years and might be even bigger than these.

Great to see some more bulbs from the amaryllis family. I like the flowers of Ammocharis they are just like the flowers of trumpet shaped lycoris. I would appreciate if you mention the species name as well because there is a lot of variation in flower shape and the month of blooming/dormancy within same genus but different species.

They are sold as AMMOCHARIS CORANICA, THE KAROO LILY and BOOPHANE DISTICHA.

I like brunsvigia bosmaiae the most. It's an amazing plant with flowering ball radius upto 2 ft.

Ammocharis Coranica you are talking about ?

I ve been in talks with many african bulb exporters and they all say that Ammocharis would take 8 years to bloom frm seed.Only one out of 5 exporters said it needs 6-7 years. There are many bulbs of this specie available for sale aged at 4-5 years and it is mentioned that it'd take another 2-3 yeard to flower.I dnt know if you are talking abt the same Ammocharis Coranica. Some other ammocharis varieties do bloom in 3 years but not ammocharis coranica, otherwise I'd not have paid handful of money for these.3 year old coranica bulbs are sold for 6-10usd.

Yes, it's an amazing site.Just purchased 2 of these ... cost me 10,000 including shipping. They are 13year old FOWERING SIZED bulbs.
