Cow Dung is a bad idea for sowing mix.....one can try this if you are sowing in ground but Pots (A big No)....Cow manure has enormous micro organism activity in it, thereby more chance of Fungus. There are various types of fungi....in layman...Some eat away seeds even before they germinate, that must have been the case with you
Secondly timing was not right. All sowing activity should be either in spring or fall especially for beginners. Try some sowing in Fall and you will be amazed. It's SOOOO Easy. Actually its the difficult conditions in other months which cause failure. Even if your media is poor...still seeds will survive and grow in fall as the temperature is low enough to minimize the fungus attacks.
Lastly the exposure should only be morning sun ( Sun till 10 am) if you are sowing in hotter months and that too in Pots.
