Last spring I visited Irfans home his potted annuals were wonderful. I was so impressed that I decide to go for container gardening in full steem.
I am using 2 parts river sand, 2 parts bhall, 1 part leaf compost and some cow manure and a little NPK 20-20-20.
The result is quite satisfactory, to me.

Sir, you mentioned to use crushed bricks for hippeastrum, can we use it in perennials??.. in my opinion, for annuals there is not much problem in using conventional mixes like 2 part soil (balu mitti here) with 1 part manure, this mix when supplied by a little NPK is good for 4-5 months (a period in which most annuals complete their life cycle here) but for perennials there is a marked decline.. especially for a flowering/fruiting perennial like Gardenia, rose, lemon..
I will be reverting to container/small bed gardening by this year.. need to develop a good mix with proper air porosity, water holding capacity and buffered acidic pH.. and by using the locally available stuff..

Izhar you are right.
For perennials I am using crushed brick mix
I add coarse brick crush for bulbs having thick roots
And add leaf compost if desired.
Leaf compost heap
I add chemical fertilisers and not the cow manure.

Limiting factor for me is that in Karachi we dont have red bricks (i will look for it at the kumhar parra), you get these crushed bricks from kiln?
