How To Graft Adenium

Post by tweedle2009 »

Adenium is a succulent plant which can be propagated by air layering, seeds or by grafting.Grafting is the most common practice among gardeners and commercial growers as a grafted adenium will start to flower in only a month. You can also graft diffrent colors on to a single plant.

This technique can be used to graft other plants as well.

Things you'll need:-

Adenium Plant to graft
Adenium Plant to be grafted
A sharp Razor or scalper
Thread
Thin plastic film used for covering or packing. You can also cut small plastic shopping bags into strips to air tighten the joint.
Another Plastic baggy to cover the graft.

Care:-
The adeniums should be grafted when it's not too wet or too cold.We get 46C in June but it is still favorable for grafting as long as it stays dry.July sees hight humidity and this is where grafting should notbe done.In Pakistan the months most favorable for grafting include April,May,June,August,September.

Place the grafted plant in shade.

Donot over water. You can reduce watering but don't stop at all.

Make sure no water drops over the baggy. It'll make the graft rot.

When the graft has united, slowly move into a sunny location preferably after 25-30 days of graft date.

Grafting of Adeniums and any other plant like roses, citrus, mangoes etc etc is necessary because of the following major reasons:

1) The grafted plant is a hybrid so it cannot produce viable seeds or if it produces seeds the new plants do not carry the desired traits
2) The grafted plant is difficult to propagate through cuttings
3) The grafted plant's roots are susceptible to soil borne diseases

The grafted plants are always superior quality plants with better blooms or better fruit yield while the rootstock plants are usually seed grown robust plants of same genus..

in fruits grafted plants or budded plants tissue is actually clone of the mother plant.for e.g if u take buds from Sindri mango & bud it on wild stock,it will be 100 % of the mother plants.all the traits will be 100% same as of the mother plant.Izhar am i right.budding & grafting is one of enjoyment of gardening.
