Re: Plants for Hanging Basket /pots in Pakistan
sallokhan sb,
In our routine manner of thinking, we first select the plants for a particular purpose, (like for hanging basket) and then look for a suitable place for them. Most of the time we end up buying a plant just because we like it, without considering its suitability for the place where it will be grown.
Another method (and in my view the better method) of doing the same thing is to first determine the conditions (environment) that exist in one's house / garden and then select only those plants which are suitable for those conditions. This method is time tested, longer lasting, more rewarding and low maintenance but the disadvantage is that you may not have a plant that you might like to have. I support this method because it inculcates the true sense of gardening, while understanding the dictates of nature. And if one wants to have a plant which is not suitable for the environment, than this method guides a person as to how should he create artificial conditions to make that purticular plant grow well. Therefore, understanding of aspects related to soil, water, sunlight / shade, humidity, air circulation, drainage etc, which colletively constitutes the living environment for plants, is of utmost importance.
Hanging baskets are placed higher in height from the beds / other plants and therefore, it is difficult to maintain a higher level of humidity. In such condition, seculants or those plants that need less humidity do better than those which need humid environment.
Now this is a very simple hanging basket arrangement. The containers are porous and do not hold water so the drainage is excellent. Aptenia cordifolia and Chlorophytum comosum 'Vittatum' have very less water requirement, do not like humidity much and therefore, are ideal for hanging baskets in our areas. This kind of hanging arrangement can tolerate full sun also.
A similar arrangement; only a cactus has been added. This arrangement is watered after 10-12 days and as you can see, it is doing quite well. All three of these plants have the ability to store water (through different methods / organs) and therefore, do not need to be watered too frequently. This means less maintenance. The protulaca arrangment that you showed in your pics is also an excellent seasonal hanging basket arrangement, low maintenance and productive.
Arrangements shown in above pics contain plants like Epipremnum / Scindapsus cultivars, ivys and hoyas that need high humidity levels which are difficult to maintain in hanging baskets, except in monsoon. Moreover, direct sunlight is not desirable. For such arrangements, regular misting (or any other method) would be needed to create desired levels of humidity artificially otherwise these plants will not grow well and give a shaby look. These kind of arrangements are unforgiving and do not tolerate neglect.
There could be many more options in plants, however IMHO, whatever we may select, it should suit the environment where it is to be grown.
regards

Re: Plants for Hanging Basket /pots in Pakistan
This is actually AWESOME!
I so wanted something like this in my house.
This Moss that you have in the first baskets, can it be found easily in Pakistan? And what purpose does it serve?
And most importantly. I have Cement wall. How would I drill a hole in that? Using a Drill? Do I just need simply Nails or some other fancy stuff to make a stronger holder?
