Watering after sowing??

Post by Usama »

After sowing seeds in the ground, should the initial watering be thorough or just a sprinkle? By thorough i mean good half an inch so that the soil remains wet for a few days without the need to water. On the other hand sprinkle every day? What is better? I believe that on large scale agriculture people always practice the former. Sprinkle is too far-fetched an idea. :?

depends on seed size also. Larger seeds will tolerate drenching. Small ones sown close to surface will be displaced and gone. It can affect germination also. Better is to deep water before sowing. When ground is less soggy and workable then sow seeds. After that light water either as showering or light water spilling. But spilling should be indirect so as the water reaches the sown area indirectly.

Before you sow, water the land thoroughly so its wet. Then plant your seeds. Then sprinkle everyday.

As farhan bhai said, smaller seeds (close to surface) will need more sprinkles and larger seeds (sunflowers sowed deep) will need less sprinkles.

Spilling a lot of water at once can also displace tiny seeds near the surface or expose them to the sun!
