Canna

Post by Muhammad Arif Khan »

Canna has been there for such a long time that we have stopped perceiving its beauty. It was perhaps lack of space that I limited it to a few plants. Now that I have lot of space available I have started collecting it. My choice will be bright colours and big flowers.
The plant itself is charming with green, red and variegated leaves. It also has a long bloom period. My house sparrows love to feed on the flowers which I have to protect by net.

I love Cannas (Brig. Sb. yours is so beautiful)... the new (okay not so new) dwarf Tropical series from Takii seeds is very nice for pots as well (I have its pink variety right now)... last year I had Canna "City of Portland" which an excellent bloomer, now I am looking for Canna "Cleopatra" which has double colored flowers as well as leaves.. though it is available in Karachi but is Rs.1500/- (a bit expensive for now) as Cannas grow very easily here so I can expect for the prices to come down...

This variety has usually two spikes blooming one after the other, each spike has number of buds. The dead flowers need to be removed to keep its tidy looks. The plant is not for viewing from close quarters, nothing equals its display from distance. Each plant has a specific place in a garden and must be planted accordingly.

Aoa Brig sb your canna is striking.actually you are right canna is on its best when planted in masses.one sigle plant do not create the powerful impact.i love it because its very easy to grow, provides very impresive blooms plus very decorative leaves, thus giving a very vivid color to a lawn.but one draw back its only suitble for big lawns.brigd sb as Izhar said try The dwarf ones.F1 Tropical ser(SAKATA),F1 Tropicana(TAKII).a new add in dwarf summer anuals where there are very few good varities are avble.

Umar, Canna "Cleopatra" has flowers with yellow and orange combinations, some flowers can be completely orange or completely yellow or with freckles or distinct colored petals on same bloom, it is a medium sized canna, below are pics from internet:
