Amaryllis 2014

Post by Muhammad Arif Khan »

Yesterday I have cut the leaves of my mature Amaryllis.
Confirming my previous observation I found that in three and a half year old seedling bed growing under the same conditions the size of bulbs varied from 1 to 4 inch diameter.
In your opinion why is it so?
Is it genetic or the weaklings could not compete with others in extracting nourishment from soil?
I think they are genetically weak or just small. I am planning to pull them out and create another bed for further observation.

I believe the question was very interesting but it required the knowledge of plant sciences/genetics in depth. Please share the answer once you find one.

There is usually no, one answer, it is always a combination of factors, most of them have been mentioned in http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load ... 45.html?10[/quote]

135 bulbs of one and a half inch and smaller have been shifted to a separate bed.

Scapes are appearing on bulbs in pots and in beds, but the most exciting is the 2011 seedling bed;

Will they be good, will I get some thing extra ordinary,
the result of my program will be soon out, Will I pass or fail.

Cutting of leaves is not essential, I did it to assess the condition of bulbs, remove the weaklings, to remove extra soil between the bulbs ( the seedlings tend to go deeper), the fresh foliage gives a neater look, it widens the neck and I can apply fungicide/miticide easily.
