lots of rotten manure is NOT advisable for Dahlia even though some websites advocate using it. I'll write a detailed reply later listing the reasons. Try growing them from cuttings. The Dutch masters take upto 40 cuttings from a single tuber and grow the cuttings in silver sand.

here's a link which may assist you. Gott is the leading expert on Dahlia's and he suggests using compost and sand as a potting medium which resonates with my experience. More can be read in detail in the link below. You would need to lift the tubers and otherwise leaving them in the pots is a recipe for rot. The main problem experienced in plain areas is the humidity/moisture during the monsoons which tends to rot these tubers.
