Spring Annuals Guide

Post by Hamad »

Farhan as per our recent discussion I think this is the right time to start this thread, because it will take some time to get all the information compiled, list to be populated or items to be Enlisted and in the mean time it will be the right time to plan and start sowing for spring.

Its a request to our senior, knowledgeable and experienced members to contribute into this list as we did earlier for Tubers, a list of Spring Annuals will be a reference for future and will allow beginners/novice like myself and a lot others to get some help and guide line in a single thread to plan for their Spring 2014 and many more to come.

As I m totally inexperienced and green in this field, reason being I will request Farhan to take the initiative and start this list with some names and the rest will follow inshAllah and we hope the response will be overwhelming the way it was for the list of Tubers

Main Contents
Name
Right time to plant for example early, mid or late fall
Time to flower same as above early, mid or late Spring
colour
Height

Participation requested :)
Thanking you in anticipation :) :D

Will add as I remember more. Please give your inputs

Sowing Time
Time to Sow spring annuals varies depending on the temperatures; therefore I would call this as a bracket. Ideal would be October, however they can be sown as early as Mid-September and as late as mid-November. Late blooming species can be started early also in controlled enviroment.

For precise bloom time, one may look into sow-bloom time for each specie, but I guess we are not that systematic about this.

In-Situ/Pot Sowing
Recommendation for Sowing in pot (controlled environment) or In situ is based on many aspects. Including can plant tolerate transplanting, seed size, surface sowing, seed hardiness as compared to environment, frost hardiness, Costly seed etc.

Legend Bloom Time (Approximate)
Late Winter Till February mid
Early Spring Late Feb to Early March
Mid Spring Mid-March to 1st week of April
Late Spring Late April
Early Summer May

Above may vary slightly dependent on difference in climate (such as for Karachi)

More Additions
Myself and I am hopeful others will be experimenting with many others this season. If successful we will add those in the list. I am experimenting with at least two dozen new this season.

Members may give their inputs/experience and point any error if observed.

Correction Made. Kindly read paragraph above the table. Actually its a bracket. When temperatures are down between 15-25 Deg Celsius Most sowing activities can be undertaken. Kindly refer this for somewhat exact temperatures and other detailed info

never sow when the season is warm, wait for temp to come to <20 C in the night , best times for LAHORE is November, earlier than this can initiate fungus problems like damp off and you may loose your seedlings/efforts. the technique to sow and cover with palstic sheet is best, just water the soil, put seeds, cover with palstic bags, no water again and observe daily and thats all , chances you will get 90% sucess rate of seed sprouting.
