Curcuma

Post by mikhurram »

Curcuma belong to the ginger family which include Hedychiums and turmeric. The name comes from Arabic word "kurkum" meaning "turmeric". They prefer light shade or filtered light and moist soil with conditions similar to Hedychium. Being hungry feeders they require fertlizers and tend to bloom around April or May.

This year i was given some Curcuma rhizomes which were placed in a soil bed around March and developed lush foliage. Name of variety is unknown and was imported from Thailand many years ago. The picture of the flower is presumed to be light pink similar to the one shown below which is not mine. Has anyone grown Curcuma ? If so please share your experience with Curcuma.

Turmeric used in our dishes comes from the "Curcuma Longa" variety. The roots of the rhizomes are boiled and then baked to get dry powder known as Turmeric. We can grow it also for the sake of flowers.

March/April or from August/October with context to Lahore's climate. Medium can be garden soil with some leaf mold.
