Streliza Reginae (Bird of Paradise)

Post by mikhurram »

Native to South Africa, Strelitzia reginae (Bird of Paradise) grows well in our plains. Small plants require at-least 6 years to flower and hate being disturbed. If disturbed they don't flower for a couple of years. They require sunlight from morning till noon and shade protection from afternoon sun. Being fuss free plants they don't require any special care and multiply rapidly. Flowers are used as cut flowers.

An updated picture with more blooms will be posted soon.

They don't like me and I don't like them, the two plants I have can stay where they are even if they don't bloom.

Their usual time of flowering is these days. However sometimes they also tend to flower in March but that is rare. They take time to establish flowering. I bough three small plants for Rs 30 back in 2007 which were planted in a soil bed. They took 4 years to flower and since then have been flowering each year on a consistent basis. Bird of Paradise hate being disturbed and usually when divided tend to delay flowering by a couple of years. There are two colours associated with Bird of Paradise. The most common is orange and yellow is difficult to find even though seed of yellow variety can be purchased but if grown from seed would take at least 7-8 years to flower. Flowering stays on the stalk for 2 weeks.
