Re: Spring without Cactus impossible....
You have a very good collection of Cacti. Though some varieties contain exquisite colours but I have stopped growing them as the bloom duration is very short with flowers lasting barely for a 1 day or at maximum 2 days. Compared to Daylilies whose stems contain multiple buds the florets in a cactus are less at max 4-5 merely.

Re: Spring without Cactus impossible....
Asalamulaykum everyone...
Just join this lovely site...and not long ago, (about a year ago) took my first baby steps in planting and growing cacti.
Although the cacti i planted last year are growing fine (by grace a Allah all survived accept one)...but non have flowered. As yet I have no idea what the individual varieties in my little collection are called. I got all of mine from a generous next door neighbor who has a good collection, (took all of them as little kiddy plants from his pots).
As a beginner...I used regular river silt or "bhaal" + regular builders sand + some organic material to create the potting mix. A mistake i`m sure in the eyes of an expert hobbyist! But since I operate on a tight budget I had to make do with what ever was at hand...!
Please guide me on how to create a good potting mix for my future spikey fuzzy friends...
I will soon post pictures of my plants so please guide me on what the individual varieties are called...and from where do all of you guys source all these lovely varieties (I understand that cacti are rarely available at local nurseries, and even if they are they cost an arm and a leg to purchase as prices at nurseries are unreasonably high!?!) Is there a cheaper way to buy/get cacti varities from? I like growing mine from baby plants...!
