Problems with water pond (algae and insects)

Post by khabbab »

My large clay pot in which growing waterlily in full sun has green algae i.e. Kai. Any organic method to get rid of it?
Also there are some water bugs, insects doing black holes in water lily leaves. Any remedy?

I know a fish species which eats algae and i tried it in my clay pot last year but it died probably due to oxygen problem. I just put more water in clay pot after some days. The other treatments i am still looking at internet to find suitable. I do not want to loose the count of butterflies and sun birds at my terrace. Never used any insecticide yet.

I have been keeping fishes since my childhood, Khabbab bhai although many fishes live almost entirely on algae for their whole life but sorry to mention that none of the fish will help you combating the Algae.

Aquarium shops carry very inexpensive (Rs.15-40) chemicals which inhibit the growth of algae, but you have to clean the pot first then add the chemical which is usually 4-5 drops per liter.

However, if you still want to add fishes then keep the following ones:

Mollies (Black Molly, White Molly, Albino Molly)
Platies
Swordtails
Siamese Algae-eater
Plecostomus

In large concentration it kill the algae spores (or anything in direct contact) by oxidation, but in smaller quantities it blooms the algae by increasing water oxygen concentration.

35% is used for algae in ponds, so it wont damage plants.
