Around ten years ago I set up two beds each containing nothing but camellia and hydrangea respectively. I laid down a mulch of grass clipping, pine needles and leafmould then old cardboard and newspapers then overlaid another mulch of grass clipping. this was primarily to keep down the weeds acidify the soil and provide an alternative source of nutrients for the slugs and snails.

I kept this routine up for a few years until the plants were well established and no understory weeds were able to get a hold. Now the beds are self sustaining in respect of plant health and vitality. Annually I Will supplement the soil around the camellia to ensure the soil remains acidic. The rest of the soil in the garden is most definitely alkaline

No dig gardening really works in very many different settings

Thank you Ifzaal sahib for sharing your experience and members may be tempted to try 'No Dig' technique in their garden. I feel this technique is worth trying in our gardens especially from April till August. The choice selection annauls available during the summers is very limited and even if one grows an annaul like zinnia one would enjoy the display merely at maximum for 2 months which is cut short by monsoon onset in July. During these hot summers months (May, June) plants require watering on a daily basis. Thus i feel this approach can be ideally be tried from May till August and would help also to conserve water.
