What vine is this.

Post by aykhan »

I have an aggressive vine which was sold to me as Cledendrum thompsonie :( Obviously it's not when I see the flower. I'm sure someone here can help out with identifying what vine is this.

Thunbergia Erecta & Thunbergia Grandiflora both comes under the category of Vines and Climbers. We can shape Thunbergia Erecta into bush by hard pruning, while Thunbergia Grandiflora is purely vine. Alba cultivator of Thunbergia Erecta is very similar flower to Thunbergia Grandiflora & here we can see only the picture of flower.
Now choose from following pictures, which one is your plant.

It has to be grandiflora since the flowers are similar and it is a very aggressive vine. Thanks!

Saw clerodendrum thomsonaie plant at madina nursery in Pattoki few months ago. Leaves were clerodendrum if i remember correctly. Price was around 300Rs. Keep close eye on leaf shape of both. Saw Thunbergia grandiflora at main gate of Lawrence gardens lahore, the leaf has many edges. While the clerodendrum does not.

BTW alata species of thunbergia has some interesting and dull colors. Intend to grow alba in spring.

Dr Amir, I think it is time to upgrade your camera :D

Hahaha...Khabbab.....I use the convenient phone camera for these plant snaps during my garden rounds! :D Actually consider myself a semi-pro photographer and Canon is my brand. My arsenal of lens include some really nice L-series lenses but I need to upgrade my EOS 20D. I'm sure I will offer some good plant snaps when I see a lot of color in my garden.
