Well kevra flowers rarely, may once a year with 2 or 3 flowers. We had a mature "tree"... a ladder was need to chop the flower for gifting others etc. I am not sure why your kev-ra has not flowered and if it is the authentic kev-ra plant to begin with. The real kev-ra leaves are leathery dull green with plenty of propping roots. I have been sold "fake" kevras and they never bloomed. Secondly kevra has male and females flowers and exist as separate trees. Male one flowers and the female only bears fruits.

When we used to live in the university, we had a huge kev-ra plant, the male one. It used to bear large yellow flowers. And that day used to be a treat as the whole lawn would be fragrant. It sheds tons of pollen if someone is allergic, he/she should not grow it. After more than ten years I have never been able to find kev-ra again...and those came after after us they got that pine chopped off.

Could you post a picture please of your kev-ra, rather a close up of the leaves?
Mr. Farooq: Am posting a picture of the plant as well as closeup of a leaf. Have compared with images on the Internet. They seem very similiar to mine. Its leaves have very sharp serrated edges and if you are not careful, you can cut yourself on it. Also throws out a lot of ariel roots and side shoots, which can be potted. However, you are more knowledgable. What do you think. Plant was gifted by a friend several years back.

No sir, as far as I can tell this is not kev-ra. I know it is a variegated version but a green version of the very same plant was sold to me as well. I threw it away. Kev-ra leaves are leathery and dull green. They do not bend like the ones shown in the picture. The rest of the features are the same.

Your screwpine will flower some day like the real kev-ra but it might not be fragrant. And by all means it is too young to flower. Unfortunately we don't know whether it would be a male or a female tree :-(. As I mentioned earlier it will start to flower and you will need a ladder to actually see the flower! Just let it grow.

I had heard that Hamdard University (Karachi) has a botanical garden and they do have kevra plants. If someone can verify that would be great.

Hello1 wrote:The Cherry Blossom or "sakura" in Japanese is not very fragrant. However, the delicate beauty of it's pink or whte flowers leaves one wonderbound and you can only utter "SUBHANALLAH". Cherry blossom flowering period is pretty short. Our own Hunza has this wonderful tree. Japan is ofcourse the home. Recently I was on a vacation to Italy. While fully prepared for art masterpieces and architechtural treasures, I was least expecting to come across 'sakura'. however, I was lucky to see many specimens. The attached photo is a street planted with cherry blossoms in Tivoli, a small town near Rome.
Hello1 your name please? and are you art/architecture student or professional because I m also art/architecture lover and I designed couple of things, I did a government school(nursery class) in Pakistan designed couple of sofas and did some interiors and a bit of Landscaping now planning to do some architecture but totally different style out of box or unconventional style.

Dear Farooq

I have been reading your posts regarding your search for Kevra and you know what i have also developed an interest in the plant :) . Since you havent been able to find the authentic plant locally, what are the chances of either buying or bringing it from foreign. Have you researched its possiblity. I mean can one import it.

Good to know someone is interested. I would rather search it from a place where we can actually see it growing and flowering. The problem is that kevra flowers after a long time IF it happens to be a male plant. What if someone sells a plant and it is a female...may be after waiting for 5-6 years, no flowers :-(. An Indian based seed website sells its seeds. I am sure there must someone in Pakistan who is growing it. A good place to start is Hamdard Dawakhana/ or their University. Karachi University nursery could be another option (but as far as I remember, they didn't have it). Their internal nursery occassionally had some rare plants. I am not in Pk so you can try your connections to see somone in Hamdard University :-)

We can think about online sources as well.

Can we start a new thread?

Let me check and find out some connection in Hamdard University for that. If we fail from there then we can go for online sources as well. What do you say.

Ask someone who is in their pharmacy dept or in Hamdard laboratories. I would be more than happy to search this plant with you.

The scientific name of this plant is Pandanus odoratissmus.
