The main purpose of the forum is that all the discussion that goes around comes into record in black and white so that other members can benefit from it. If chat is allowed this will not be possible and two people will talk it out within them, hence of no use to others as well as may be waste of valuable knowledge as it is not recorded.

Secondly we have to respect the space of other members. Some member at certain time might not like to engage in chat for any reason, hence it would be either burden on that member if he is forced to chat or seem discourteous to member offering to chat if he is not replied appropriately.

One example is that lets say one member ask something from a member on a chat and then ten others ask some what same thing(first of the the answerer will be bugged). Secondly is that more useful or the first discussion present in black and white which "n" number of members can read. no need to ask same thing again & again.

last submission or suggestion is that if someone wants to communicate with any member on inter-personnel level he can always resort to networks such as Facebook etc

Yes you are right, the basic purpose of forum is to share information about gardening, if two individuals are sharing their experiences in a chat than rest of the members unable to get knowledge.

Well im in little favor of shoutbox (saybox, tagboard, or chatterbox), because when someone say something in shoutbox every member can read and reply to that message immediately, this gadget is usually place at the home page of forum.
