My mali told be to let the water melon vines run along the ground. I thought it might be better tohave them climb and then add a support for the fruit when it forms. I'm thinking the vine might rot due to the moisture on the ground as will the underside of the fruit be more easily accessible to bugs.

Khan sb your mali is very right.leave the vines to run on the ground.have you noted the yellow patch on water melons.its due to the ground run.the part which is lying on the ground is yellow.i have also planted water melons this year.

Mine are planted close to the tomatoes which I'm fertilizing. I think this is the reason their leaves are turning yellow. I'm going to probably have to stop fertilizing the tomatoes.

I think it is better to try new things, trailing watermelon vines is now in practice in most part of the world but it requires lot of work & care.

You can also transform your melons in different shapes by enclosing the watermelon in container. Square shaped watermelons are very popular in Japan.
