Izhar wrote:All the available rose varieties suffer from same problem in Karachi starting from May and ending in September... firstly the month (July) you picked for planting them was not correct... it is recommended that the new rose plants are planted in the month of November (in Karachi).. now as you can see that the new growth has been started, which is a good sign, start giving them granular fertilizer like Engro zarkhez NPK, (go to the garden shop and ask for NPK, these are light bluish granules).. administer the fertilizer lightly (mere sprinkling a handful over a cubic meter), away from plant's stem and water immediately... as the new growth speeds up, prune the weak and old branches to promote more new growth, when the new shoots are 3-4 inches pinch their tips, it will make the plant more bushy, dont let it form blooms before December and take out any flower bud..
The fertilizers should be given ONLY during active growth period and tilling (godi) is also recommended during the active growth season which is from October till May.. fertilizer should be administered with 15 day gap..
Roses should not be washed regularly, it will promote the fungal diseases in them, however you can wash them weekly in the morning when there is ample sunlight to dry them up before night..
Roses are susceptible to various pests, it is recommended to spray a general purpose pesticide every week on them, whether you see any pest or not...
You will inshaAllah have a great blooming season with roses.. dont hesitate to ask any question..
Thank you for the detailed do's and dont's for roses. They have certainly been an extremely tough project for an impatient person like me. I also had questions as to pruning. How do you differentiate between the heathy and weak branches. From what I have seen there are the green stems and the dark brown ones. Then my mother also started to cut off according to her "useless" stems of some kind.

What is the correct way to take out flower blooms before December? The designated rose area gets 6-8 hours of sunlight.

What would be a good multi purpose pesticide keeping roses in mind. I think we use Malacide. Is that good enough?

Any thin branch is a weak branch, branches which grow during summer are generally weaker, the new growth is usually brown in color and matures to dark green.. there is no special procedure to take out the flowering buds.. when you see any bud just pluck it with your hands before it matures.. the reason for this is to put all the energy in new growth of branches and leaves.. you can use any pesticide available in market, most of them are general purpose and kill nearly all bugs..

Hello. Just saw this post. Umm i'd say a couple things from my very little experience. I'v grown roses for two years. I have two plants from two years ago i bought as bareroot in straw. They're quite big now. But majority i got last year also bareroot which are also pretty good sized! I grow all mine in pots. Reason is large trees whose roots have taken over the ground. Pots range from 10 inches to the biggest i have currently is 16inches ie 7 gallons. i will have to get a larger one after this winter!

Growing roses in karachi is albeit difficult for many but over the two years i have found that following some guidelines, it isn't as difficult as people say. A regular regimen of insecticide fungicide is a must with smart fertilization as izhar and umar uncle have mentioned. But even after this, when roses bloom in their prime from mid-november to march, i feel all my work has been well rewarded :)

Budding of roses

Post by Mustansir Billah »

I've two rose plants which are not budding since 6 months. They are kept in small pot and are about 3 feet. They are growing normally but not flowering. How much sunlight is required by them in Karachi's Climate. How should we water them and what quantity of water should be given for their proper growth. What are the best rose for Karachi's climate. What pesticide should be given to them. They are kept in sunlight for 6 to 7 hours and we water them two times a day. Is gudai is useful for them?

Following could be the reasons:

1) Growth of the wild root stock rather than the grafted rose
2) Lack of nutrients

Please post a closeup picture too..

See I have shifted it in bigger pot but I don't know that it will rather work or not and what is "LACK OF NUTRIENT"? I always pull out grass and any other plant grown in it. and If we can spray water or water plants in sunlight?? I am attaching some photos which might help...

These are suckers growing from the wild root stock.its good if you grow own root bushes.if you want grafted then you will have to remove suckers regularly to ensure good growth of the grafted stock.
