Re: fertilisers for roses
When you take a growing part of one plant (e.g. a growing bud, = scion) and physically attach it to another plant of the same kind-that process is called grafting. So the roses that you typically buy are grafted roses in the sense that root system originally belonged to one plant known as the grafting stock, and the stems, leaves flowers were part of another rose. At times it happens that the shoots start to appear from underground, growing below where the scion attachment was made - those shoots are suckers. With a careful look and if the rose plant is young you can actually see where the grafting was done- it is left as a surgery mark. Suckers take away all the nutrients and eventually kill the grafted part. Another way to identify suckers that the leaves are smaller than grafted growth and it is very thorny.Mustansir Billah wrote:What are suckers and What is grafted stock?????
If your actual grafted rose has died and you can be patient, let the suckers grow. The rose suckers eventually produce beautiful and very fragrant pink roses of the wild type in few years. If possible transfer to soil because in the suckers might not bloom in small pots

If the sucker is new, locate the base of shoot manually remove it since it very soft. If it has become really old i.e. it has turned green (new suckers are typically reddish leaves and stem) locate the base of the sucker and use a pruning shear/ secateurs to chop the shoot as close to base as possible, making a smooth cut without damaging the root stock. Some people tend to use a trowel "khurpee" to remove suckers but there are chances to damage the roots, especially if the plant is new.Mustansir Billah wrote:What is the method to pullout suckers??

Re: fertilisers for roses
Why the suckers grow in roses?? Is it because of poor caring or it grows naturally after some time?

Sucker is jungli gulab. On the jungli gulab, another rose variety is grafted (pevand). Suckers then grow naturally from the jungli gulab underneath!

Re: fertilisers for roses
Suckers can grow in other grafted plants and trees - they grow naturally e.g a well established grafted chikoo tree will show a sudden growth of rootstock suckers. But what induces suckers is a good Phd project in horticulture :-)Mustansir Billah wrote:Why the suckers grow in roses?? Is it because of poor caring or it grows naturally after some time?
