Impatiens hawkeri (New Guinea Impatiens)

Post by M Farooq »

Impatiens hawkeri belongs to the touch-me-not family (Balsaminaceae) originating from New Guinea. It is very similar to the ordinary balsam plants grown commonly in Pakistan (see the entry Impatiens balsamina in our database) however this Impatiens has very showy and larger flowers. The specimen shown in the pictures is successfully being grown in Lahore. More local details will be added once they are available. Tentatively, highly detailed information is available from the Missouri Botanical Gardens.

Note: Impatiens hawkeri is a popular but not an accepted name. The current status is that of an "unresolved" name i.e. botanists have not determined whether it is a synonym or a different species. http://apps.kew.org/herbcat/getHomePage ... ns+hawkeri
