| Other Details | Nerium oleander is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the dogbane family Apocynaceae, toxic in all its parts.Oleander is one of the most poisonous of commonly grown garden plants.DANGER."Alexander the Great in his military campaigns is said to have lost men as a result of eating meat skewered on the highly poisonous Nerium twigs.Its sap has been used as rat poison". A tender plant, Nerium oleander can survive light frosts, but show signs of frost damage. It is a common landscape plant in tropical and subtropical climates and grows in a wide range of soils. It can withstand drought and salt spray, being widely used in coastal areas, and reacts well to full sun or partial shade. The species can be propagated by semi-ripened cuttings in summer or seeds. Hard pruning helps to maintain its shape. |

oh too much poisonous plant and so common in gardens..
i am myself astonished after reading the qualities of this plant..

Totally agree, despite being so poisonous, yellow aphids continue to chew the new growth. The sap is very injurious to human eyes as well. So while pruning oleander, please be careful.

Dangerous... Some people-if not most,do not read the details, thus would not be cautioned. I suggest,if possible word "POISON' must be prominently written on the Photo of this plant here,as also of such plants like Dhatura.

Americans are very cautious of poisonous plants but this one is grown extensively in all states especially as road divider hedge running for miles and miles.
It can’t be poisonous enough to shun.

I agree. Plants are poisonous when someone eats them (with many exceptions). Most people in the right state of mind would not chew kanair (it is used in medicine especially in
Hikmat). The oleander stem is very bitter. And everyone's favourite here-
Aristolochia vine has components which are proven to cause cancer in humans (see Aristolochic acid). This vine is still grown as an ornamental. But I don't like ths vine for this reason.

Are you talking about oleander or Aristolochia (a different but often discussed vine here)?

perhaps munir sb is in confusion when you talked in your post about Aristolochia vine he mixed it with oleander..so munir sb oleander is only bush or tree as discovered by brig sb.
