Isn't Detroit a bit too cold for growing peppers ? It definitely must be a struggle to grow them in such unfavourable climatic conditions. You must be growing the seedlings in a greenhouse or indoors and then presumably shifting them outdoors in April. The Mexican varieties in peppers are supposedly the most spiciest ?
My experience with peppers has been limited to growing some seeds from Sakata series which i gave up as seeds are quite expensive or attempting to growing the 'Piper Nigrum' plant which doesn't survive during the cold winters here despite taking care of placing it in a greenhouse.
