As both of you are container gardening, its not the issue of ground/top floor, you should improve your media and drainage and more importantly avoid over-watering. If you feel that you plants are drying up quickly due sun, change their exposure to partial sun.

Top floor is more hotter and dries plants.Try some 'goddi' of your pots,it may help.

One thing more is that you can place the pot on soil by layering your floor with few inches of soil to avoid direct contact with hot concrete.

that is probably the problem,,, your pots are getting very very hot from all angles burning the roots outer layers, when you water them the thermal shock is causing them to deteriorate further leaving them vulnerable to infection and failure. Try a different more insulating pot material as well as some protection from the hot concrete...

alternatively go for plants that are more heat and drought tolerant

Good idea by Farhan.I may add that place a piece of guine bag or 'Bori' under the pots.It will retain some of the water and your pots will have cooler area down the root zone.
