Re: few inquiries....
You are looking for Western foods :-)...I haven't seen Asparagus, cranberries in Pakistani markets. Beetroot is too common, check any decent sized and you will find a packet from any nursery. Turmeric can grow easily if you happen to find the rhizomes but why grow yourself??fa113nang311 wrote:aoa,

Glad that you brought up dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) - it is a weed that most Pakistani gardeners hate to see in their gardens and eventually throw it away but it has great medicinal value and is used as food. I don't know the Urdu name but our language didn't make enough progress in plant sciences to have names for uncommon/ unimportant plants. Even if it does exist it will be in Persian or Arabic (from the Yunani school of Medicine or Hikmat)

Re: few inquiries....
Moringa is very common tree. Its Urdu name is "sojnay ki phali". It is a huge tree. So is ginseng. Not sure about Brocolli. Well, the beneficial value of ginseng/ and other valuable plants comes after long term eating habits. When they say brocolli (may) prevent cancer and so on...it is a very long term effect.fa113nang311 wrote:thanx 4 the quick reply farooq sb. yes these are all western plants or actually super plant which have lots of nutrient value. read an article that's why i was interested in them...

Re: few inquiries....
Kalonji is easy to grow from the seeds. I haven't grown turmeric myself but it isn't difficult either. But you are worrying about stuff which can be obtained from the market in a highly pure form. I may be concerned ( abt adulteration) if I am buying turmeric powder but some people prefer to buy turmeric rhizomes and grind them in front of their eyes. Kalonji is also less prone to adulternation.fa113nang311 wrote:appreciate ur subtle information....what abt tumeric and kalonji plants???? besides blueberry and mulberry can we grow any other berries??? and also tell me abt avacado plant if it can be grown.. thanx once again.... :D
Depends on how you define berries- "Bair" grows very well, jaman is rewarding too, strawberry requires care and skill in our environment...most of the western berries (blueberry, blackberry, cranberry, gooseberry, etc) would be rather difficult to grow for sure.
Sorry, no idea how to grow avocado...have some dislike for this fruit.

Re: few inquiries....
Clove is "laung" in Urdu. Kalonji is Nigella. My suggestions is that since you have spent your life in middle east, visit decent nurseries in the city and discuss with the nursery men to get an idea of what is popular and what can grow well. They certainly will not know the Latin names or English versions but you can have a look around the nursery in fruiting trees section. There are plenty of local fruits like Amla, cheeku, leechi, Jaman , and if you are fond of rare fruits, then passion fruit, star fruit (Carambola tree), red papaya, Jack fruit (it is a monster in size), that would do well in Lahore/ Karachi type weather.fa113nang311 wrote:aoa, i am not at all worried just curious and interested because i like variety in my garden. so thats why i am asking people who are professional gardeners and have knowledge about these kind of stuff.

Re: few inquiries....
i have been to a quite a few nurseries here in lahore but couldn't find a decent one. most of them are all thugs with no knowledge at all. from them i have bought most of the fruit trees lets say almost all. right now i have 4 dates trees, cheeku, few bananas, few mangoes, jamun, double apple, two olives, guava, 2 pomegranate, keeno, grapefruit, 2 mulberries, figs, falsa and many others. inshallah i will post some pics soon. i also have quite few spices plants. then there are all vegetables for this season. just planted them yesterday. actually my mali is very good.
u didn't answer about agarwood tree which also called liquid gold.
thanx
