There is no heat in my Green Chilies

Post by salmanbutt24 »

I tried some of my green chilies today (don't know the type or kind) and there were next to no heat in them, infect they are juicy. Will they get hotter the longer they stay on the plant? Is there anything I can do to increase heat?

I think they are of "Cold Type" :-)....not all chillies are very hot. Modern cultivars also aim to achieve timid taste.....i don't think staying longer on plant will have significant change.

There are many types of peppers, these might be mild or sweet peppers, these are used in salads and for grilling for adding crunch to meals full of Vitamin C :)

The heat in chillies is usually related to the environment as well as the variety. Some varieties remarkably manipulate themselves to become hotter and unpleasent to mammalian grazing

Clever gardening techniques can actually manipulate the genetic make up of these plants for instance feeding chilli plants the run off from worm farms can actually increase the heat in chillies. As it is the run off not only contains fertiliser but also the dead and decaying bodies of worms. When you apply the juice The plant believes it is being attacked by insects and thus increases its capsaicin content as a deterrent thus you get a hotter chillie.
