Gardenia is difficult to make bloom in pots. It requires very specific temperatures and humidity as well. In soil temperature fluctuation is minimal as compared to pots.
There are 2 varieties of gardenia jasm. also known as gardenia florida. One the tall bush type and second one is dwarf. Both are fragrant.
There are 2 other species growing in lahore. One is gardenia lucida, a small tree and very fragrant flower. The other is coronaria with non-fragrant flowers or maybe fragrant in the evening. These 2 were blooming in lawrence garden in march.

Following varieties are easily available in Karachi and all are heavenly fragrant (some intensely and some to a lesser extent)
Gardenia vietnamensis
Gardenia jasminoides
Gardenia carinata
Gardenia thunbergia
many of them are planted in a local mix of manure and soil, so are established plants with acceptable number of blooms.
Yesterday I sniffed a Gardenia jasminoides which was in a 2' tall and 18" wide clay pot and was a well established shrub with lots of blooms and buds.... the fragrance was just unbelievable!!!!!
Price was Rs.3000/-
I have been reading much stuff on Gardenias and was thinking on starting them from seeds, available at Thompson and Morgan, any views?

Mir Sb. water it with Vinegar (1 tablespoon in 4 liter water) so it could absorb the nutrients available in the soil, never use boring water it is too hard for it.

Gardenia jasminoides ( cape jasmine) need ericaceous compost ( lime tree compost) to grow well..

Ericaceous is (Lime free) compost not lime tree.
