The best way to preserve is to keep them in the soil, otherwise they will rot in the monsoon..

So for the potted dahlias, once blooming ends is itbest to leave them in the potin a dry shady spot and not water them? Just trying to get the specifics. Thanks.

Not bone dry.. they should be watered once a week and if they sprout, just keep them growing.. these sprouts can be used in taking cuttings by September-October.. do not fertilize them.. and spray a general purpose pesticide every 15 days..

Re: FABULOUS FIGAROS
OK , but what if i put them in my store room (keeping them in the same pot) in a dark area, here external temperatures rises above 40 C for 4 continuous months and there is no monsoon. Last year i take out Anemone tubers after season and store them in nets in my STORE ROOM it was disaster nothing come out this season. But this technique of storing in nets is working for Glads & other bulbs.

Re: FABULOUS FIGAROS
Tubers have a short storage shelf life compared to corms and bulbs.. same goes for potatoes, soon the eyes develop and they start rotting, however if in the soil, they can remain viable for the whole dormancy season..

Re: FABULOUS FIGAROS
i have done a blunder i pulled out Figaro tubers and stored them in store they started to die see right one in photo, the left one is just pulled out few days ago and is still healthy, iam putting it back in soil, lets see can it survive or not throughout summer, also my Lilliums bulbs were drying when i stored them so i push them back in the soil again.

As far as Lilium is concerned, their corms doesn’t hibernate like other tubers their roots stay alive and you have to take care of that, there are two ways to store them in off season
1. Take them out of soil in such a way that their roots will stay in contact with the soil means bare corms.
2. Put them in a breathing bag with a little bit of soil in it.
Also take care of the temperature where you are keeping them, I hope this will work but don’t have any idea about the Dahlia because never attempted to keep their tubers may be any Dahlia expert can add a little in it.

Re: FABULOUS FIGAROS
Remember, all these bulbous plants are designed by the nature to survive in dry soil during dormancy.. so digging them up is only advised when the soil tend to freeze, like in the northern areas.. even then many bulbous plants survive the freeze easily... so always keep these in the soil they are during dormancy... or if in case you have to dig them up, then immediately bury them in pots with some soil for storage..
