New Periwinkle Plant for Summer 2013

Post by Asim_Nawaz »

Last Year I can grow seeds of my new variety of Periwinkle Plant by cross-section of two periwinkle plants. “White and Pink” to produce seeds of “Catharanthus Roseus” having following specification.
Periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus) is a reliable bedding plant that's hardy in all zones. Small dark green glossy leaves are adorned with flat, one-inch, five-petal blooms having red spot inside 5 white petals.
Scientific name: Catharanthus Roseus
Rank: Species
Higher Classification: Catharanthus

Asim, nice effort. This periwinkle is also commercially available. I did not understand as to what did you mean by "cross-section of two periwinkle plants". Did you imply cross pollination in which you transfer pollen of one plant to another under highly controlled conditions? By controlled conditions I mean that one would protect the flower from random pollination by air/ insects etc.

Would you like to share your technique as the stigma of periwinkle is not highly exposed?

Yes sir, this is sada bahar. Just for the interest of readers, some of the components of sada bahar plants, are used for treating blood cancer in commercial medicines. Our very own scientist Dr. Salimuzaman, contributed significantly in this area.

That is totally off the mark. You can google and see that "Ratanjot is the Hindi name for a number of plants in the borage family (including Alkanna tinctoria or alkannet) traditionally used for colouring..."

Dear M Farooq
I follow the technique of Cross Pollination by crossing of stigma and stems of two periwinkle "Sada Bhar" having White with yellow dot inside and Pink with pink dot inside. After pollination I can produce new seeds having White flower with inside red dot. I have lot of seeds. Hope of this time commerically available in market. According to this also F1 Hybrid Vinca.
I try my effort " How to cross pollination of stigma and stems of plants".
According to my friend its "Sada Bhar" also using in medicines.
Best Regards
Asim

My experience of keeping periwinkles, except for the common traditional varieties is a Total failure. Plants seem to thrive and flower and one fine morning you wake up to find the leaves drooping and in a day or two the plant dies. I try to keep the soil moist and do not over-water. Also give them an occasional shot of balanced NPK. Can you or any other member give me tips/guidance on their successful upkeep? You are welcome to send a PM, if you want. Nurseries in Karachi sell 8 or 10 really pretty colors in dwarf variety.
