It appears that single flowering primula did much better than the double one...

What is this "tier planting" how do you get to grow on side of pot ? Is it petunias that is growing outside the pot !

Tier planting is growing plants at different levels, in this case in a single pot.
I have two such huge pots, I made one and a half inch holes on sides at different levels with a cutter drill, I filled the pot with potting mix (Bhall, Leaf compost, balanced fertiliser) up to lowest level and placing almost a month old seedlings grown in individual small pot in the hole and gradually building it up. Midway I placed a 2 inch dia plastic pipe in in the centre, pipe coming up to the brim, filled the pot and planted other plants at the top. The pipe is for watering of lower level.
Yes on the sides are Petunias of different types and at the top Phlox and Nasturtium.
