Tahir sb, this the closet and best picture I can find... click on the picture. The picture clearly shows the leaf texture, the thorn pattern and the leaf colour. http://aromata.lt/kvapai/en/products/at ... ewda-attar

Once you have time and are able to post the pictures of the kewra you found, I can also assist in identification.

Guys, here are the pics of Screw pine from the nursery in Islamabad, they have three plants, one larger than the two... 2500 rupees is their demand for each plant.

Thank you Tahir for your efforts for posting the pictures. It seems that it is not a true kew-ra, but still it is a Pandanus. The distinguishing feature are the reddish edges and the thorns or spines. It looks like Pandanus utilis to me. http://www.medipalm.com/lang-fr/herbace ... tilis.html

The actual kew-ra has white thorns, dark green, waxy leaves.
According to Wikipedia the male plant of Pandanus utilis does bear fragrant flowers. What knowledge did the nursery man had about its flowers? Did he say they are fragrant? Any idea about its gender to the nursery guy?

Regards,
Farooq

When i asked them about Male/Female, the guy gave a smile and said 'don't know, 5 plants came in March... 2 were sold and 3 are remaining.

About the flowers... the guy there didn't know if that plant ever did flower or not... it will be a blind pick... you may get a male if lucky :)

Tahir bhai...people have developed tests for gender identification for trees including Pandanus but they are beyond our (amatuer) gardening skills. Biological science kahan sey kahan pohunch gai hey :-)

It still is a Pandanus... female fruits are edible I read somewhere. And they are more decorative, so female Pandanus are preferred rather than the male for decorative purposes in the gardens. Gender inequality as usual!
