Re: Rose Database
During the past seven or eight months, I extensively read about the roses, visited numerous places where roses were being grown by knowledgeable people and discussed the issues related to roses with people inside Pakistan as well as outside Pakistan through discussion forums / by personally talking to them. I even planted around 40 new rose bushes of different types (including many DA roses) in my house and monitored their performance in the past 5-6 months, taking pics and keeping records.
I have come to this conclusion that giving one odd photograph of a rose (from the same region) and copy pasting his / her characteristics from HMF doesn't help us much with regard to enhancing our knowledge about that particular rose rather creates confusion sometimes. You see, the same rose when planted in two climatically different regions might have different shade / shape of flower, different scent and even sometimes, a different growing habit. Even in the same climatic region, same rose might perform differently when planted in an overall alkaline soil with a particular composition of minerals in it as compared to an acidic soil having an entirely different mineral composition OR in the same house a rose might look very different with change in weather. Therefore, giving pictures of just one odd plant at one particular time of the year can give a general idea but won't really help those who want details and may confuse the reader at times. During the past 4 months I have taken pictures of the same rose bush (over 200 bushes in all) and their flowers and in certain cases, the flowers are very different and cant be recognised easily in the pics.
IMHO, the answer lies in having a database like HMF where everyone can add pics, give his / her comments which are debated by others; so that the subject is being continuously updated. If that is not possible than a knowledgeable member (who has sufficient time) should moderate such a thread (ie, he should be able to edit the basic database and update it as and when he gets some authentic information / picture about that particular rose in the same thread / any other thread / any other source).
In the absence of these measures, the whole exercise may not be very prudent. IT MIGHT NOT BE AUTHENTIC and authenticity is important.
I apologise for wasting the time of so many members on something which I do not consider very authentic / very useful at this stage. Hope my argument will be taken in correct perspective.
regards

Re: Rose Database
Sir As we are advancing in Plant Database....as suggested by you, you can add entries of roses with more peculiar information and images of naturalized roses. We can set you permissions of Moderator and you can at your liberty alter information along with other Mods assisting you. You, yourself, Umar Khan Sb and Dr Amir are better suited for this task.

KBW sahib, I beg to differ from your view point. You are denigrating and disparaging your own hard work by saying that the rose database is not authentic. Okay, well it may be not but it is an excellent starting point. A beginner, who likes roses, will not have to search thousands of names now. By looking at your rose database, he/she can easily narrow down his search to say ten names!
Same is the idea behind making a database of Pakistani garden plants. It is certainly not as authentic or accurate as it should be but I guess it is an excellent starting point. There are plenty of books on the Flora of South Asia, Pakistan, India but nobody has access or the expertise to decipher the description of local plants. Nor we can use those books to identify local garden plants. Our effort is to make it simple for everyone, including ourselves. The same goes for Wikipedia. When we start researching a certain topic, Wikipedia is an excellent starting place but certainly it is not the end.
Please continue :-)

Re: Rose Database
I agree with Farooq. We should have a starting data/information of every garden plant, including roses & what else have you. It should be modified/updated whenever a new or a more authentic information becomes available.
KBW Sb, now please take up the challenge-the other mentioned members can provide great support. My humble suggestion is that it be kept as simple as possible for referrence by an ordinary gardner/layman like me. My observation is that,at times we tend to go rather more technical than desired.

Re: Rose Database
KBW SB why are thinking that your data base is not authentic.you can say that for experts and for botanist it is not authentic but people like me who are new in rose field it is very handy ..we will visit nursery and tell him names and after examining few varieties we can get a beautiful plant although not perfect variety but similar may be.so dont be discouraging and continue to update the rose database it will work for us INSHAHALLAH.KBW sahib, I beg to differ from your view point.
