Using New soil

Post by Mustansir Billah »

Is there any need of changing the soil of the pots after some time And if not changed what will happen and how much it will affect?

With growth,the roots dont have space to go and sometimes they come out from the bottom drain whole.Also nutrients are consumed present in the pot soil so re cycle is needed.It depends on the type of plants.I think once a year or after 2 years some pots need to be changed with fresh soil.

It is rather ambiguous, are you talking about perennials in a pot or potting soil of annuals?

I am talking about the perennial plants. Could this problem be solved by fertilizing it?

The problem is a little complicated;
We add organic matter to the base Bhal or XYZ, it has certain porosity, over time the organic matter breaks down in to very fine particles which block the air space and the media becomes less porous that is one reason why we keep changing the pots from smaller to bigger ones.
Depending upon what you have in the pot even the biggest pot may not be enough, in this case the experts re-pot after trimming the old roots and change the soil also. I might kill the plant doing so.
I would recommend, when you think roots are not able to provide enough nourishment resort to foliar fertilisation.

Yup that is what I do. Its called root pruning, I do it every two years or so with my roses and citrus plants. Best time to do is during our winters, that would be december/january when temperatures are extremely mild. Please look up root pruning. Aim is to get rid of the circling roots, and replace some of the old soil. BUT ONLY IN WINTERS. Arif sb is right, when done in summers, plants die as I have learnt the hard way :cry:

The roses are not of much age probably 1 year and are kept in 16" pot. The problem is of other plant like Motia and raat ki rani. They are kept in same pot since 1.5 years.
