I used crates for strawberries and lettuce. Generally those with a shallow root system. Some people also use the plastic paint buckets 4 5 8 gallons (make sure to drill holes in bottom). Have also seen them growing tomatoes and potatoes in "bori"!

Possibilities are endless ;)

I have the same question about Plastic Containers... How they work? I have a 5' width and 12' long corridor on the side of my home where almost 5to 6 hours sun shines, I want to grow vegetables there in plastic containers ... Any suggestion please... Is this workable?

Miss Farah 5" width container is too small, with this small width u can just sow coriander and mints. I also suggest u plz avoid to sow in plastic container bcoz it leaching harmful toxins into the soil, water, plants and eventually our body.

Mr .Kashif thanks for your opinion about plastic containers.. Secondly I am talking about my 5feet wide corridor not the 5 inch container..

i would like to add another type of container called "thermocol box" its generally available with Fish meat shops almost every city in Pakistan, they are very light to transport/ move around, also wide and deep enough for planting most vegetables and fruits like strawberries , very very cheep comparing with plastic, wood and clay containers of same size, but its imported to make few holes at the base for water drainage, and also look for strong and thick boxes in-order to keep box in shape after filling the potting mix / soil.

I suggest do not buy the red clay ( fine surface gas fired) pots. Plants have a stunted growth in them. Buy ordinary pots and do not paint them. Trust me on this one.
