Backyard Garden - Need Advice

Post by mirshad »

I have just joined the forum. Interested in planning new backyard garden. The city is Islamabad. Backyard space available is 96' x 19' (Open to Sky) and 60' x 18' (in shade). Both spaces are joint spaces i.e. half is open to sky and approximately half is under shade.

Looking to have Papaya, Kino, Plum, Apricot, Fig etc. Would appreciate ideas on what to grow along the 96' backyard wall. Any idea on what should I grow or will grow under shade area?

Thanks to all.....

if you could add some photos for better idea and in which direction is your garden N.E.W.S, and how many hours of sun light you receive every day, after getting answers we could be in a better situation to guide you or help you, though I m not good at fruit trees but members will help you to plan accordingly.

Yes Mishad you can grow Westeria at Islamabad but first you have to make a structure for it.You can get potted grafted plant from Peshawar mod which can be planted any time of the year.

I have seen a lot of rooftop commercial gardens in our northern areas and almost all of them grow onion and garlic...

I have made a polythene plant nursery like tunnel on the roof top. I grow ornamental plants in pots and crates as I don't have enough place in my courtyard to grow them.
One also can grow vegetables in crates as well.

Any pictures?
No where in northern areas there are houses big enough for roof top commercial gardening, certain places when the house is by the hill slope and roof at the level of hill, it may be used for domestic farming. Mostly the roof top is used for drying of food to be preserved. If you fly over the area in Sept. you will be surprised to see all roofs pink with drying apricots.
