The bright white is an indication of the reflective property. Pumice is actually 'volcanic glass'. It's massive air pockets will insure insulation from baking summer sun.

Re: My rooftop container garden

Actually, on the contrary, walking is soothing on pumice. I can't explain it. U have to hold a piece to get an idea of its properties. It should be more accessible in khi
The kalanchoe I got from diamond nursery/garden center last year for 400 each. Fared the best. Blossomed in peat moss/perlite with part sun part shade. The ones in soil didn't do so well. Possibly bcz they like acidity

I haven't come across mined pumice/fresh pumice. This one is used in stone washing so there r no pointed ends. But I imagine even if it were pointed it won't still be any less good

Re: My rooftop container garden
That's a hard question. As u can see I have them in a cement pot filled with peat moss. I didn't take them out of their small plastic pots and placed the pots in the cement pot. My dripper was placed in the cement pot and not in any of the plastic pots directly. So any moisture these got was from the bottom hole of their pots or from rain.
Low the watering was pretty low overall
