Rice Husk/Rice Hulls/Rice husk charcoal
I went Yangon (Myanmar) and Bangkok (Thailand)... I noticed that they use burnt rice husk (rice husk charcoal) exclusively for cuttings and also for many bigger plants too... plain or un-burnt Rice husk is also used extensively in the potting medium, combined with coco peat and coco chunks...
I observed that the growth of many tropical plants were very good... and also roses were planted in a mix of rice husk, manure and coco chunks... they also use slow release fertilizer for every plant...
Do we have rice husk charcoal available here??

I think you can get it dirt cheap from any rice sheller.. i had thought of using it but did not know its implications.. However it should be very easy provided you have rice mills around you..

Re: Rice Husk/Rice Hulls/Rice husk charcoal
Rice husk is very common in Sindh due to extensive industry of rice sheller plants. Rice husk is also used in bricks kiln. There may be other uses as well locally.
However, if it is found effective then we can use it here as well.
The other day I was reading media used in foreign countries for Adenium since my plants need to be watered daily and I wanted to change the media for better moisture retention in hot season so came to know about rice husk charcoal being used in Thailand.

I guess it can be arranged from bricks kiln but that I guess would be really burnt and in powder form. Can you describe how did you find it there in Thailand.

if it is like sand it probably would be a byproduct of a process where it has been used as a coolant or a refractory material in a particular process where it got nicely roasted or burnt but not to the point of ashes as in burnt in fire but just grinded or been in a process of high temperatures.. contact rice sheller then ask who buys and what process they use in, you shall reach there.
